Project Management

This guideline aims to promote an understanding of the essential requirements for the successful management of an ICT project.

The purpose of the guideline is to provide direction on best practice in project management, describing what senior management should expect from a project (regardless of its size) and identifying the questions to ask at various stages. The principal points addressed in this guideline include:

  • Key concepts and issues to be familiar with regarding project management;
  • Initiation of a project and the management planning involved;
  • The continuous activities that characterise project management, such as work planning, resource management, project control and reporting;
  • Project completion and benefits realisation.

The scope of this guideline is best practice in project management from the initiation to the completion of the project. The lifecycle for a project is detailed from the development of a concept for investment in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), concluding with a post implementation review to assess whether the expected business benefits were realised.

This guideline is primarily for agency level practice but to meet government requirements it should be applied to individuals, sectors and whole-of-government programs. This guideline is best read in conjunction with the Business Case Development guideline, the Quality Management guideline, the Benefits Realisation Register Guideline, the Change Management guideline and the Project Risk Management guideline.
