Labelling Sensitive Information - Guide

The objective of this guideline is to provide examples of each level of sensitivity and give clear guidance on preparing and handling; removal and auditing; copying, storage and disposal; and transmission of such materials.

The guideline focuses on three levels of sensitive information and the rules for handling this information to protect confidentiality. In some instances (particularly information in electronic form) the labels may also indicate a need for additional measures to safeguard integrity and ensure availability.

The guideline shows those agencies who already have labelling and security procedures how to tailor the Guide to meet their own internal needs based on any existing procedures, their own risk assessment and observation of the minimum standards set out in the Guide.

This guideline is primarily to assist agencies in safeguarding information in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act (1998) and to ensure that agencies do not create their own labelling schemes.
