Benefits Realisation Register

The purpose of the guideline is to provide a framework for agencies to manage the realisation of anticipated business benefits available from business change projects involving an ICT investment.

This guideline aims to assist in the development of benefits realisation strategies that are part of a business case to justify investment proposals for information and communications technology (ICT) projects.

The purpose of the guideline is to provide agencies with a framework within which they can manage the realisation of anticipated business benefits available from business change projects involving an ICT investment. The guideline examines the main steps, including:

  • Identifying and defining the potential benefits to be achieved from undertaking a particular project;
  • Planning for the management of the benefits that are expected to be delivered;
  • Ensuring all activities identified in the benefits realisation review are implemented and put in place;
  • Monitoring and auditing benefits against set targets.

The reason that the benefits realisation process must be managed is that many ICT project benefits are the result of reforms in business processes that are enabled by the project or technology, rather than by successful implementation of the project itself. This guideline advises that the realisation of business benefits will affect corporate planning as it may require significant changes to business processes.

This guideline is primarily for agency level practice but to meet government requirements it should be applied to individuals, sectors and whole-of-government programs. This guideline is best read in conjunction with the Change Management guideline and the Project Management guideline.
