New Report Released- CSIRO investigates solutions for NSW data centres
June 09: The Government Chief Information Office commissions the CSIRO to report on alternative energy and cooling solutions for data centres.
The Government Chief Information Office is currently investigating options for data centre reforms across government.
In a bid to affordably and efficiently comply with the NSW Government’s Sustainability Policy, the GCIO commissioned the CSIRO to investigate and cost alternative energy sources and cooling solutions for the Data Centre Reform project.
This included identifying locations in NSW where data centres could exploit the environment to reduce the amount of electricity used to cool data centres.
The CSIRO investigated gas-fired tri-generation, wind, solar and geothermal electricity production as well as the use and availability of geothermal and waste heat to drive absorption chillers. CSIRO also considered the opportunities to use cool or cold air to supplement data centre cooling.
Findings have shown gas-fired tri-generation and various cooling solutions as emerging as the most cost effective and environmentally beneficial options.
The CSIRO is finalising the report for publication during the third quarter 2009. If you have any questions about the report contact info.gcio@commerce.nsw.gov.au.
